X.on + PEER

The X.on is Brain Products’s answer to recording high quality EEG from participants out in the real world, including in self-donning situations. It is a seven-channel, wireless amplifier that uses saline/sponge electrodes, has an input for non-powered sensors such as a photo sensor, and can fit head sizes from adolescents through adults. It streams its data to an Android phone via Bluetooth (BYOD – bring your own device), and can sample at up to 500Hz. The recording amp can check impedance, record data in the openly readable BrainVision format, record additional phone sensors (temp., altitude, GPS, etc.), as well as send the live data out as an LSL stream.

The X.on is also especially well suited for teaching EEG to new students, such as in undergrad lab courses. It pairs with an optional software tool called PEER (developed by Dr. Olav Krigolson’s team at https://brainwavesoftware.ca/), which runs on modern iOS devices and offers a comprehensive suite of ERP paradigms for out of the box data collection. PEER will immediately plot the generated ERPs, while also still giving you access to the raw data to analyze it yourself in other programs. In this way, the time between data collection and seeing the results is almost instantaneous and can help keep your and the student’s attention on the neuroscience and not on debugging code or hardware. PEER is a separate add-on and is offered as a perpetual license
